Easy Fall Decorating Crafts with Kids

It’s not officially fall yet, but it will be soon! The leaves are turning colors and falling off of the trees, and people all over the US, from Seattle to NYC, are bringing as much of this lovely fall color into their homes as possible.

There are some wonderful home décor projects that are fun to with kids! Crafts and sensory art projects not only help you and your children to bond and learn about the materials you are using, but they help develop a sense of calm and order in your children and yourself. Crafting something lovely from raw materials is therapeutic and helps develop parts of your childrens’ brains (and re-awaken parts of your adult brains!) that might not get used often enough.

The first thing to do, is schedule time. Arts and crafts are no fun if you are in a hurry! Crafts should be relaxing and enjoyable, so set a block of time and show your child so he or she can have the pleasure of looking forward to it. That time is for crafts, nothing else!

The second thing to do, is set up a space away from everything else which you can dedicate to your project. Some projects might need to sit out to dry or cure, and will need a place to sit without being moved. A little folding table set up temporarily in a corner of the dining room or something will do nicely. Find plenty of newspaper, cardboard or an old tablecloth to cover the work area with and contain the inevitable mess. If you are not worried about the clean up, then you and your child will have a much better time creating something.

Thirdly: gather your materials! What are you trying to achieve? A centerpiece for the table? A doorway decoration? A mobile? If you have smaller children, consider something easy, such as a painted pumpkin or hand print art.

Enjoy the experience! Are you painting? Why don’t you join your child in feeling the slippery, squooshy paint between your fingers? Spread it around, glory in the slippery. Are you using leaves? Get your warm sweaters on and make gathering them a special outing! Point out the changing colors of the leaves, explain to older children what makes the leaves change colors Look for acorns and other nuts and show your children how nature has provided all kinds of good, fattening food for the hibernating animals to prepare for winter with. Find your crafting sticks and leaves, then come home and have some cinnamon apple cider that you left simmering in the crock pot.

You are not only introducing sensory play, art and inspiring a lifelong love of crafts to your children. You are also creating memories. The years go by much too fast, and every special moment like this you spend with your children creates happy memories they can turn to when they begin to face the pressures of growing up. Cozy, happy home life, memories like this, help to create solid, happy kids and young adults. If you want to help the world, begin at home. Make good memories with your kiddos.
